FLORIDA KEYS TARPON FLIES - The Inhaler |
THE INHALER
TYING THE INHALER |
This fly is my favorite fly to throw at baby tarpon on dark or blotchy bottom. I've also caught many large tarpon on the Inhaler in the Islamorada backcountry as well.
A quick tap retrieve is best. For baby tarpon tie this fly on 34007 1/0 stainless hook and for large tarpon tie on a Mustad 3407SS 2/0 or 3/0. |
THE RECIPE
Tail: Chartreuse Rabbit Zonker Strip - Inverted |
Head: Chartreuse Medium Estaz |
Eyes: Black Mono Eyes |
Thread Protection: 25lb. Mono - snelled |
Thread: Chartreuse |
Hook: Mustad 34007. 3407SS |
Hook Sizes: 1, 1/0 2/0, 3/0 |
STEP #1
Place a #1 mustad 34007 hook in your vice.
Starting mid shank, cover the hook with some flat waxed Chartreuse thread. |
TYING TIP
If you are using 3/0 flat waxed, do not build up the thread too much. This will cause problems later on. |
STEP #2
Tie in a two and a half inch chartreuse zonker strip.
Also,
Make sure you place the zonker inverted so the actual hair on the zonker faces down. The reason for this is that most of the time, a tarpon will come from underneath to eat the fly
TYING TIP
Make sure you kick up the tail by wrapping around the base of zonker 360 degrees.
I usually wrap it about 8 or 9 times. This is an anti-foul measure. When choosing a zonker strip for tarpon flies, I try to look for a zonker strip that is quite stiff. You will notice some pieces of zonker are quite limp or thin. By choosing a stiffer piece, the fly is less likely to foul. You can also put in a mono loop, if preferred |
STEP #3
Tie in medium black mono eyes a half inch in front of the tied in zonker strip. |
TYING TIP
Be careful when tying in your mono eyes. They break easily if bent too far. |
STEP #4
Next, at the base, tie in chartreuse estaz. Wrap it towards the eye of the hook. Wrap it figure eight style over the mono eyes and tie off. Trim estaz to form a round head. |
TYING TIP
I like using medium to long estaz and being able to trim the head the way I want. |
