THE DEER HAIR SHRIMP

FLORIDA KEYS FLATS FISHING FLY SELECTION

THE DEER HAIR SHRIMP

The Deer Hair Shrimp is a great bug for Bonefish, Redfish, Trout etc. This is a Tim Borski pattern. This one in particular is my take on it.

Notes: I used a Gami SC15 for this pattern for the purpose of this lesson. Using this hook, the fly will actually ride upside down. Please use a Gamagatsu B10S.

STEP 3

Tie in a clump of brown craft fur. You can do this a few ways. You can simply just tie a few tuffs of craft fur around the shank or you can make a dubbing loop and add the fur that way. I refer the later.  Using the dubbing loop keeps the bulk down considerably which is always a good thing. SEE FIGURE 1.

STEP 4

Stack some natural deer hair (about a width and a half of a pencil. Place on the shank but DO NOT spin it. Make 2 loose wraps and pull down then tie in 4 or 5 tight wraps.

TYING TIPS

Note: Hold it tight at the wraps with your thumb and fore finger while making the tight wraps.

DEFINTION OF SPINNING DEER HAIR

For spinning deer hair in fly tying, start by cleaning and stacking the hair. Use a spinning tool to wrap it tightly around the hook shank, creating a buoyant body or head. Trim excess hair, shape it with scissors or single edges razor blade and secure with thread wraps

STEP 5

To secure bead chain eyes on a bonefish fly, carefully figure eight the eyes onto the hook shank. Use a strong thread, like 3/0 flat wax nylon, to create tight wraps. Don't forget to make multiple parachute wraps around the eyes for the ultimate lockdown.  I also do some reverse wraps as well.  This will prevent any movement during your bonefish pursuit.

TYING TIPS

After making your wraps, add a pinch of super glue to lock in the eyes

STEP 6

Now, tie in another clump of deer hair (same width as before) between the previous clump and the bead chain eyes. Make 2 loose wraps, pull down then 4 or 6 tight wraps just as before. STACK YOUR DEER HAIR!

SPINNING DEER HAIR TIPS

Note: Before you spin deer hair it's best to stack the hair in a stacker. Once the deer hair is stacked, remove hair and firmly hold the tuff with one hand and comb out the under fur.  The step is essential for getting a good spin. This fly does not require a spin but I thought this would be a good tip for you to know

STEP 7

Take a double edged razor blade and break it in half. See Fig. 2. Hold the razor as shown here while trimming. This can take a while if your as crazy as I am. I like my flies perfect but they surely don't have to be.

TYING TIPS

Note: These razors are super sharp. One wrong move and you can cut too much or cut your finger.
