FLORIDA KEYS BONEFISH FLIES

THE ABOMINATION
TYING THE ABOMINATION

The Abomination was created while sitting at my vice with one of my clients Raymond Laurel. This pattern is certainly one of my favorite patterns to throw. Although tied for Bonefish, this pattern has been eaten by redfish, baby tarpon, jacks, ladyfish and many more species

THE RECIPE
Tail :Tan Craft Fur, Pearl Krystal Flash
Body: Tan and Cream Rug Yarn
Thread: Chartreuse
Eyes: Medium Bead Chain Eyes
Markers: Olive and Chartreuse
Weed Guard: Mono V
Hook: Mustad 34007
Hook Sizes: 2,4,1,1/0

STEP #1

Place a #4 mustad 34007 hook in your vice.

Starting mid shank, cover the hook with some flat waxed Chartreuse thread
TYING TIP
If you are using 3/0 flat waxed, do not build up the thread too much. THis will cause problems later on when adding on the sparkle yarn

STEP #2

Tie in a clump of tan craft fur in, about the diameter of a pencil and about two and a half inches long.

VERY IMPORTANT:
After that is tied in, bar the tail with an olive magic marker. Make sure you use a permanent magic marker.
TYING TIP
Make sure you kick up the tail by wrapping around the base of craft fur 360 degrees.
I usually wrap it about 5 or 6 times.

STEP #3

Tie in 6 sprigs of Pearl Krystal flash. At this point, you should cover the thread with some Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails. Before the Hard as Nails dry, figure eight in 5 pieces of yarn alternating between tan and cream.

TYING TIP
Always coat the fly with Sally Hansen's hard as nails after each step.

STEP #4
Now, Tie in your medium gold bead chain eyes. After this is done, take your scissors and cut the yarn diagonally towards the bend of the hook.
TYING TIP
Make sure you have extremely sharp scissors when cutting materials. I actually have two pair of scissors, a very expensive pair for trimming hair, yarn etc. and a less expensive pair for cutting mono and artificial hair.

STEP #5
Next, take a small wire brush and brush out the yarn until it looks meshed together. You're almost done!
Now, Trim the head like shown in the picture to the left. In this final step, take a chartreuse Sharpie magic marker and dab the head. Make sure you to go light on the chartreuse. Just little dabs. Take an olive magic marker and do the same.
TYING TIP
TIP #1: Make sure you use SHARPIE magic markers. They seem to be the best permanent marker out there. They rarely fade like other markers.
TIP #2: Make sure you get yourself a small wire brush. You can find one at any local hardware store. YOu want a brush about the size of a tooth brush.

There you have it, THE ABOMINATION.
