THE REDFISH TURD

FLORIDA KEYS FLATS FISHING FLY SELECTION

THE REDFISH TURD

This fly is one of my favorite flies to throw at redfish in shallow water. I normally tie this on a Gamakatsu B10 Stinger in size #2  hook but decided to try the Jig hook. The Jig hook will flip this fly over. It will ride hook down otherwise.  The B10 is a lighter wire hook.

HOOK DESCRIPTION

VICTORY 10413 JIG HOOK

The Victory 10413TN is a 60° heavy wire jig hook with an O’Shaughnessy bend. Super strong forged heavy wire with a tin coating for saltwater fishing. Made with an Endura Needle Point for a super sharp hook. This hook is comparable in size to the Eagle Claw 413.

MATERIAL INFORMATION

GOLD FIRE FLY

Fire Fly is a softer, crimped version of Flashabou. Shapes well and adds subtle flash.  My favorite for flashback Pheasant Tails. Fire Fly shapes to the humped wingcases better than stiffer flash and make a beautiful flashback.

EQUIPMENT INFORMATION

DYNA KING BARRACUDE VISE

This finely crafted vise offers all of the great features preferred by professional tyers everywhere. With high grade brass knobs, all stainless steel construction except the jaws made out of hardened tool steel, smooth rotation with precision ball bearings, easy height adjustment, 90° handle for speed crank, convenient material clip, notch lock cam, excellent hook holding capability 32 to 8/0, and bobbin hanger included.

STEP 2

Tie in a tuft of brown marabou. This should be about the same length of the hook.

MATERIAL INFORMATION

KYRSTAL FLASH

Similar to Flashabou Accent but available in many more colors.  Krystal Flash is an brilliant Fly and Jig Tying Material. It is a unique, super brilliant material. Flashabou Accent comes in a bundle of long, spiraled fibers that give the appearance of tiny lights at each spiral. Krystal Flash was developed for flies, but also works great on Crappie and Bass Jigs and Spinners.

STEP 3

Add about 6 sprigs of Gold Firefly (see fig. 2) on each side of the marabou. You can buy the gold Firefly here. This works great in copper color too.

STEP 4

Tie in two brown hackles. (Fig. 1) You could palmer these feathers separately which I normally do, to be honest but for speed palmering two at a time is fine. Fig. 2 This is what it should look like after palmering the hackle.

TYING TIPS

Note:  Leave yourself enough room to finish off the head. See next step.

THE ART OF THE DUBBING LOOP

"With deft fingers, the fly angler weaves a tale of deception through the art of dubbing loops. A delicate dance begins as strands of fine dubbing material are intricately looped onto the thread, creating a textured canvas that mimics the nuances of aquatic insects. With each wrap, the fly takes form, a lifelike illusion of prey. The dubbing loop technique transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, giving life to a fly that beckons the discerning trout from its watery realm."

STEP 5

Tie in your EP Shrimp Brush and wind towards the eye of the hook. Make sure you use your fingers to brush out any trapped fibers while moving forward. This fly is super easy to tie and you can bang out a bunch for your fly box in a short time.
