Great Catches of the Florida Keys
MIKE DICKERSON - FIRST TARPON
This is Mike Dickerson, an outdoor freelance writer and his first tarpon and it's a big one!!! This fish was caught on the first bait of the day. It all started at 7:30 a.m. a beautiful morning with a 10 knot south east breeze. We arrived to this fishing hole at 7:20 am and I had just put a bait out and handed the rod to Mike. As I went to rig up the second rod, I hear a tremendous shreek from the back of the boat. I gingerly (well not quite gingerly) placed my other rod in rod holder and told Mike to set, set, set. Mike was hooked up, I dropped the anchor ball and away we went. We both were waiting patiently (or not) for the fish to jump but no jumps. Let me fast forward. 3 hours later and about 4 miles from where we first started, we finally landed the beast.
THE GOOD OLE BOYS
A special thanks to Ronnie Phelps, Mark Phelps and Brian. I just want to say that each year you guys come down, and this will be our fifth year fishing together, that I wait in anticipation for you guys to call me and tell me you got your bags packed and ready to come down. The week you spent down here this year was an incredible fishing experience. Ronnie got his super slam for the week, and Mark hooked two permit on fly and Brian got his first tarpon. Not to mention all the tarpon we caught in the backcountry. It couldn't have happen to a bunch of better guys. Thanks guys, can't wait till next year......Hey Mark.. you didn't break any rods this year. I'm so proud of you.
ZACH'S FIRST TARPON ON FLY
Zach Keefe (11) and his first tarpon on fly
Zach (Uncle Zacharia) is an extraordinary angler and truly a joy to fish with. His abilities to spot fish and present the bait are truly incredible. Look out fishing world because Uncle Zach is coming to town. We can not forget Dan "Hollywood" Keefe for his amazing ability to set the hook!!! I'd like to thank to entire Keefe Family, Dan, Julie, Zach and little Dan for the past 3 days. I had a great time and it is truly a pleasure to fish with you guys!!!
THE BROOKLYN DUO
These two guys Jimmy "The Fish" (Left) and Joey Russo (Right) with a trophy size Tarpon. These guys are my paisans from Queens New York and let me tell you, Joey, who landed this fish didn't play around. He had this fish landed in 30 minutes flat. This was the first year that I fished with Joey and I am happy to say that this was Joey's first Tarpon he has landed in his 10 years coming to the Florida Keys. We also had another big fish on during this day that took us out 3 miles into the ocean. With the ocean being so rough that day and after numerous waves taken over the bow, we decided to "POP EM or STOP EM" which means turn the fishes head or break the line trying. Well I guess Pop Em would be in order here. I had a great time Joey!!! See you next year!!
THE CAPTAIN SCORES!
Well, I think I will put myself on the great catches page this week. I caught this 120 lb. tarpon on fly, fishing with my girlfriend April and my best bud Captain Eddie Hill. I fought this fish for approximately 20 minutes, it jumped about 8 times and almost had me spooled once. April caught a 30 lb. tarpon first thing in the morning on her first cast and like her, I caught my tarpon on my first cast also. And believe or not, Eddie wasn't left out at all. He managed about a 100 lber on fly too. So, we each got our fish. Being a guide, it is rare to go fun fishing due to the fact that when the fishing is the best I am on the poling platform guiding my clients to their tarpon but even I need a day off to enjoy my favorite thing, catching a Tarpon on fly. It feels good being on the pointy end of the boat once in a while.. Thanks for poling me to that awesome fish Eddie and great job on your tarpon April!!
DENISE - FIRST TARPON
This was Denise Lee's first tarpon of her long fishing career and let me tell you something, this fish was crazy. We must have weaved in and out of the bridge 10 times. Denise did a fabulous job in getting this fish to the boat.

I thought we lost her a couple of times but she hung in there tough. She caught this fish on 20 lb. spinning tackle and saved it from breaking off numerous times. Earl (Denise's other half) and I are very proud of her!!! Denise YOU RULE!!!!!
Far Right: Chris Dakan with his first redfish on fly. He caught this fish on his first cast ever to a redfish. It was awesome !!

Right: That's me (on Left) and Randy Dakan, with his first redfish also. The Dakan bothers put a double team on the reds that day.

Thanks guys!! Till next time..

LIGHT TACKLE TARPON
These photos were taken while fishing with Dan Haude, a resident of Lakewood Ohio. Arriving at the last spot of the day, I was poling along this grassy shallow water flat in search of some tarpon. After a few minutes, I spotted this large Tarpon cruising lazily on the surface. "Dan, 2 O'clock 15 feet, big fish" I said as I saw the tarpon's tail float to the surface, and with a flick of the wrist and great poise, Dan was hooked up. After about 25 minutes and numerous gill rattling jumps, this beautiful fish estimated over 65 lbs., was boatside. What makes this catch so amazing is that this fish was caught on 8 lb. test and a 6 inch 20 lb. shock leader. This Tarpon ate a live shrimp and was caught in about 2 feet of water. One word... AWESOME!! Great Job Dan!
BRIAN'S FIRST TARPON
This is Brian from good ole Mississippi with his first tarpon. Brian did an awesome job fighting this fish. He caught it on 15 lb plug gear with a live mullet. We had 3 days of fishing that week, Eric also hooked a monster tarpon on fly that shattered his 12 weight G-Loomis rod. It was something to remember!! It was a fantastic 3 days. And with these guys I surely wont forget them. Truly a pleasure to fish with and with their great angling skills, it all makes for a good combination. I will see these guys again next year and they better bring some deer meat or quails or something.. OR ELSE!!!!
