Rob Simmons first Permit ever.
I first met Rob through another one of my great friends and clients, Dave Irving. Nearing slack tide, swarms of Permit were tailing and feeding on the surface. The wind died down and the water slicked out. Perfect conditions for fall tailing Permit but the these conditions are tough. These fish are extremely spooky, one bad cast can send these fish running. At one point, Permit were on every side of the boat. Schools of 20 fish tailing everywhere. It was truly EPIC! We saw one school slowly moving away, Rob tossed a crab about 20 feet out in front of the school and he was on!!! Great job, Rob! |
Ryan Curley with his first Permit on the T-Pak Crab Fly .
Ryan called me up one day looking to book a bonefishing trip for this summer. I told him, bonefishing is great in the summer and we should have no problem finding them. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We saw a few big bonefish in the am but didn't get any shots. Eventually, we ended up in Marathon looking for Permit. Upon arriving in this spot, we spotted a big school of nice sized Permit, we hooked one on a crab but lost it. We kept poling around and got into some smaller Permit but not one or two, a couple of schools holding about 30 fish in each school. Ryan made a perfect cast to a school coming straight at us and immediately hooked up! Awesome job! |
David Smiley with a nice Cobia caught off the back of a Bull Shark on the flats.
While fishing for Permit with Dave and his dad, we saw a bull shark circling the flats with this cobia hanging on his back. After casting a few crabs at this fish with no takes, Dave picked up the 10 lb. spinning rod with a top water plug on it, pitched it out and it was game on. One or two pops and the Cobia lit up all over it. After a long battle, the fish was boat side. The fish was released unharmed. Great Job, Dave! |
Emily with her first Lemon Shark
With this being her first fishing trip in her entire life, Emily did some damage! Her friend Clay caught a nice Permit, hooked a nice big tarpon. Emily caught a few big barracuda and just took it to the big sharks. For a first time fisherwoman, Emily can fish!! She did well in fighting every fish that was attached to her line. I was impressed! Hope to see you guys soon! |
Matthew with a big fat Permit, his first ever!
Matthew came from the UK with his dad, Jim. The last time they came to the Keys, Matthew caught a nice bonefish but this time they were here at prime Tarpon time. After his dad Jim caught a few big Tarpon, Matthew caught this Permit, his first. Now that we call the three big species, Matt, what shall we go after next?? Sting Rays perhaps? (inside joke) See you guys this spring! |
John caught his first big Tarpon on fly on his first cast ever.
That morning I decided to go after some baby tarpon to have John and Nick get used to hooking Tarpon before we went after the big boys. We found loads of baby Tarpon but never hooked up. We did hook a few on DOA CAL jerk baits. After that, we decided to head to a spot where I've been seeing a lot of big Tarpon. I jumped up on my tower and started poling. I spot two big Tarpon swimming down the flat. John feverishly is stripping line off the reel. At this point, the fish are almost too close. John managed to get a cast when the fish were 20 ft. from the bow. One small twitch of the fly and the fish inhales it. This was truly a great catch! Well done, boys!! |
